FG Unveils Skilled Workforce Initiative to Boost Growth

Onitsha, Nigeria  —  The Federal Government has introduced a specialized workforce development initiative aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s industrial sector, particularly in metallurgy and steel production.

Speaking at the inauguration of a Boot Camp Training Programme at the Metallurgical Training Institute (MTI), Onitsha, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Steel Development, underscored the critical role of human capital in national economic transformation.

He emphasized that while infrastructure remains vital, the true backbone of a thriving economy is a technically skilled and innovative workforce.

The training program, designed for young Nigerians, will provide practical expertise in welding, fabrication, industrial metallurgy, instrumentation system control, and mechanical maintenance.

Empowering Nigeria’s Youth for Industrial Advancement

Dr. Felix Obi, Director of the Metallurgical Training Institute, lauded the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, technical skills development, and job creation. He described the initiative as a strategic step toward revamping the nation’s steel and manufacturing industries.

According to Mr. Frederick Ewa, Director of the Metallurgical Inspectorate Department, the program attracted over 253,000 applications nationwide. However, due to financial constraints, only 700 candidates were selected in batches. He highlighted the significant investments made in training materials, feeding, and starter packs while calling for additional funding to scale up the initiative.

Upon successful completion of the training, participants will receive starter packs from the Federal Ministry of Steel Development, equipping them to launch careers and contribute to Nigeria’s industrial revival.

With this initiative, the Federal Government aims to build a robust pipeline of skilled professionals, positioning Nigeria’s metallurgical and steel sector for sustained growth and global competitiveness.
