FG to Deploy Indigenous Technology to Tackle Oil Theft

The Federal Government, in collaboration with local companies, plans to use domestically produced equipment to address the persistent issue of oil theft and promote local content in the industry.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, announced this initiative during an inspection tour of a local company in Abuja. He noted that the Federal Government has been losing billions of naira annually to oil theft, with many experts criticizing the government for not properly accounting for crude oil sales.

Lokpobiri called on indigenous companies to develop drones for surveillance to help combat petroleum smuggling and oil theft in the country. He expressed satisfaction with the facilities observed during his visit, stating that the partnership would enhance local participation, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth, aligning with the Federal Government’s strategy to diversify the economy.

Shehu Abdullahi, the Chief Executive Officer of the company visited, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its continued support and pledged commitment to aiding government efforts in the fight against crude oil theft.
