The federal government has officially approved the partial commercialization of the 12 River Basin Development Authorities across the nation.
Professor Joesph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, made this announcement during a two-day familiarization visit to the Anambra Imo River Basin Development Authority in Owerri, Imo State.
He emphasized that the strategic move aims to enhance the sustainability and commercial viability of the various authorities.
Prof. Utsev revealed that the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation had implemented numerous reform initiatives to rejuvenate the River Basin Development Authorities.
These interventions encompass the introduction of the Songhai integrated farming model, the training of youth in agribusiness, the empowerment of graduates and young individuals, as well as initiatives for job creation and wealth creation.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to injecting fresh perspectives into flagship projects, prof Utsev maintained that the present administration is placing priority on expanding irrigation development and boosting food production.
He further outlined plans to explore innovative approaches to revitalize the Lower Anambra Irrigation Project (LAIP), the largest rice irrigation project in the southeast zone, highlighting the immense potential of LAIP for food security, wealth creation, poverty reduction, and job creation.
Prof Utsev added that the ministry under his watch would ensure that good performances were rewarded to enhance tangible results from investments in irrigation and agriculture.
Gerald Osuagwu, the Managing Director of AIRBD, expressed delight at receiving the minister and conveyed the resolve of the management and staff to fulfill the mandate given to the authority.
