FG Successfully Frees Over 1,000 Kidnapped Victims Without Ransom

The Federal Government, as stated by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, has successfully secured the release of over 1,000 individuals who had been kidnapped, without conceding to ransom demands. This announcement came as Ribadu welcomed the return of 22 individuals associated with the Federal University of Gusau in Zamfara State, who were recently liberated. The university had been targeted by bandits on September 22, 2023, resulting in the abduction of more than 30 students and staff.

Zamfara State’s Deputy Governor, Mani Mummuni, visited the university to offer condolences and urged security forces to expedite efforts to free the remaining captives. Meanwhile, Zamfara State Police Command’s spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, committed to the ongoing rescue operations, detailing that the kidnappers had attacked student accommodations and abducted numerous individuals.

Following the incident, a rescue operation led by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre resulted in the safe recovery of 15 students and seven university employees. Ribadu expressed gratitude to the security teams for their successful efforts and reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing security measures to prevent future abductions.

The National Coordinator of the NCTC, Maj-Gen Adamu Laka (retd.), explained that the rescue operations were conducted in stages, with the abductees being released in three separate groups after spending 207 days in captivity. Upon their release, the victims received medical evaluations and treatments for minor injuries and illnesses, with assurances that none of the female victims had been assaulted and all tested negative for pregnancy.

The Federal Government had previously reported the rescue of 137 students in Kaduna State in March, also without a ransom payment, despite the kidnappers’ demand for N1 billion. Ribadu commended the patience of the victims’ families and the dedication of the security agencies involved in the rescues.
