The Federal Government is poised to save a staggering ₦640 billion by opting for concrete road construction on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway, according to Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. This decision, made in collaboration with the Ministry, aims to guarantee quality and reduce costs for the government. Umahi emphasized that switching from asphalt to concrete will not only save the government a significant amount but also improve the road’s architecture .
The Minister attributed the cost savings to his engagement with Julius Berger, the contractor handling the project. He stated that if the government had accepted the initial proposal of ₦1.5 trillion, it would have incurred unnecessary expenses. Umahi also revealed that the contract with Julius Berger was terminated due to unethical practices and failure to comply with the project’s terms.
The Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee, Aminu Jaji, has directed the Ministry to submit all relevant documents related to the project to facilitate a thorough review. Discrepancies in the project’s figures presented by the Ministry and the contractor were also observed, prompting further investigation .
