The Federal Government has put forward a proposal to temporarily eliminate import duties on certain food items, a move aimed at addressing the nation’s food security challenges.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, following a closed-door session with the Nigeria Customs Service Board in Abuja.
According to Mr. Edun, the policy is intended to boost food availability, lower prices, and provide immediate relief to the public.
In a statement released by Mohammed Manga, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry, it was further clarified that this initiative is part of the government’s efforts to combat the current food shortages and mitigate the rising food prices, which have significantly contributed to the country’s inflation.
The Coordinating Minister emphasized that while this measure is designed to offer short-term relief, President Bola Tinubu remains committed to long-term solutions, particularly by enhancing domestic food production and ensuring small-scale farmers have access to essential inputs.
