Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has introduced Greenhouse Gas Emission Meters to track and quantify pollution levels nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Speaking at the launch, organized by the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu described the initiative as a landmark step toward enhancing environmental responsibility and public health.
“We remain committed to policies that prioritize both people and the planet,” President Tinubu stated. “This initiative is not just about individual achievements but about our collective dedication to securing a cleaner, healthier Nigeria.”
Represented by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace innovation, collaboration, and strategic investments to safeguard the environment for future generations.
In recognition of his contributions to environmental progress, President Tinubu was honored with the Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership (USA, Nigeria Chapter) and named Life Grand Patron of the Society for Environmental Public Health of Nigeria. He also received the Legend of Environmental Health Sustainability Award, the highest distinction in the field.
A total of 82 awardees from both the public and private sectors were recognized for their outstanding contributions to environmental health services. The Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, praised their achievements in waste management, pollution control, climate resilience, and community engagement.
Among the recipients was Dr. Muhammed Bulama, Director-General of FRCN, who received the Frontier of Healthy Environment Award.
EHCON Registrar, Dr. Yakubu Baba, highlighted that the awards celebrate individuals and organizations excelling in environmental health initiatives. He also announced the unveiling of the National Environmental Health Practice Regulations 2025 and the launch of the Premises-Based National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Monitoring Programme.
The ceremony underscored the government’s resolve to advance sustainable practices and improve environmental health standards nationwide.
