In a bid to ensure the security and timely delivery of examination materials to its numerous examination centres nationwide, the Federal Government has inaugurated 70 operational vehicles for the National Examination Council (NECO).
The commissioning of the NECO Scanning Centre, equipped with state-of-the-art optical mark reader (OMR) technology and cutting-edge software, was also part of the ceremony.
This new technology will help the Council improve the marking process and result delivery to its students and candidates. The vehicles and technology will also enhance the security of the examination materials and the integrity of the results.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. David Adejo, who inaugurated the new projects, including the Driver’s Pool, block of three classrooms for the Senior Secondary component of the NECO Staff School, and Data Centre.
Speaking at the event, the Minister applauded the Registrar of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, for introducing measures to ensure the credibility of the assessment process. He said that the five distinct projects being commissioned were critical to the effective functioning and realization of the Council’s mandate.
The Minister said that the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to transforming the education sector in the country.
He also said that the purchase of these logistics vehicles would help to address the challenge of leaked examination question papers, which had been a problem in the past.
The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Wushishi, also expressed his commitment to providing quality assessment and ensuring the integrity of the nation’s secondary school examinations. He said that these projects would help to improve the quality of education in the country.
The Registrar further explained that the logistics vehicles were an essential part of the examination infrastructure, as they are specifically designed for the transportation of essential examination materials such as question papers and answer booklets.
He also noted that the timely release of results for all NECO examinations and the improvement of staff welfare were among the significant achievements of his administration in the past two and a half years. He said that these achievements were made possible by the support and cooperation of the Federal Ministry of Education, the supervising ministry, and other stakeholders.
He however explained that the specialized vehicles were equipped with stringent security measures to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the examination process. He said that the primary function of the vehicles was to ensure the secure and timely delivery of examination materials to numerous examination centres across the country, whether they are in urban or remote areas. This included not only the distribution of question papers but also the collection of completed answer booklets for subsequent processing. He also noted that these security measures would help to prevent any leaks or disruptions that could affect the integrity of the examination process.
