The Federal Government has granted the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) Certification System to Zonal Coordinators of Weights and Measures.
This announcement was made by Nura Rimi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, during a three-day capacity-building workshop in Nasarawa State, north-central Nigeria.
Rimi emphasized that these standards are crucial for ensuring fair trade, protecting consumer rights, and promoting economic development due to the essential role weights and measures play in daily life.
“Today marks a significant step forward. The field of weights and measures is not just about numbers; it’s about fairness, consumer protection, and economic growth,” Rimi stated.
He further highlighted the importance of the role of Zonal Coordinators, stating, “As Zonal Coordinators, your role is pivotal in upholding the integrity and accuracy of measurements within your respective regions.”
Rimi, represented by Sule Dafang, Director of the Federal Produce Inspection Service, explained that the OIML Certification System is a robust framework that recognizes conformity assessment results in legal metrology. This system fosters collaboration by facilitating mutual acceptance of test results across borders and promotes international trade while maintaining high standards of measurement accuracy and reliability.
