Abuja, Nigeria— The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood alert for 198 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning of high to very high flood risks between August 7 and 21, 2025.
NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Ibrahim, attributed the warning to persistent rainfall and rising river levels throughout the country. The states expected to be affected include Lagos, Rivers, FCT, Adamawa, Delta, Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Bauchi, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Akwa Ibom, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, and Cross River.
A total of 832 communities across 198 LGAs lie within the projected flood impact zones. NIHSA anticipates possible disruptions to major transportation routes and has urged emergency management agencies to activate response plans and establish evacuation protocols for vulnerable communities.
The alert forms part of NIHSA’s continuous efforts to mitigate seasonal flooding, which annually results in infrastructure damage and displacement of thousands.
The advisory coincides with a Lagos State Government warning advising residents in flood-prone areas such as Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle to relocate from low-lying zones to higher ground to minimize flood risks.
NIHSA encourages residents and stakeholders to regularly monitor flood forecasts via its weekly state- and community-specific updates available on its official social media channels and flood dashboard.
