Abuja, Nigeria–The Federal Government has announced a seven-year suspension on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
The decision was approved during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who presented the proposal at the meeting, the moratorium aims to address the proliferation of underutilised tertiary institutions, the strain on existing resources, and declining academic standards in the sector.
Dr. Alausa noted that the pause will allow the government to focus on consolidating and adequately funding existing institutions, ensuring they meet quality benchmarks and are better equipped to serve the educational needs of Nigerians.
