FG Hails Nandi-Ndaitwah as Namibia’s First Female President

The Nigerian government has extended its congratulations to Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on her groundbreaking election as Namibia’s first female president.

In a statement released by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria hailed Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory, which was confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Namibia. As the current Vice President, her win ensures the continued rule of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), which has governed Namibia since its independence in 1990.

“The people of Namibia have indeed voted for stability. The Government of Nigeria looks forward to strengthening our historic and vibrant relationship during her tenure for the benefit of both nations,” the statement read.

Nandi-Ndaitwah secured over 57% of the vote, while her nearest rival, Panduleni Itula, garnered 26%. Despite the decisive victory, Itula’s Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party has contested the results, citing logistical issues and alleging flaws in the electoral process. The party has announced plans to challenge the outcome in court.

Many opposition parties boycotted the official results announcement in Windhoek, the capital. However, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized national unity, stating, “The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa also congratulated Nandi-Ndaitwah, describing her election as a milestone for democracy and gender equality in the region. “Your election as the fifth president of the Republic and the first woman in our region to hold this high office is a testament to democracy and its transformative power,” Ramaphosa posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Upon taking office, Nandi-Ndaitwah will join Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan as one of only two female heads of state in Africa, marking a significant moment for women’s leadership on the continent.
