The Federal Government has inaugurated the 2024 National Honours Award Screening Committee during a ceremony held in Abuja.
Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Bitrus Jisalo, tasked the committee with ensuring that the selection process aligns with the legal framework guiding the awards, which represent Nigeria’s highest recognition for individuals who have significantly contributed to the nation’s development.
In his address, Jisalo emphasized the importance of fairness, transparency, and integrity in the process. “The National Honours Award is a symbol of our nation’s gratitude to those who have dedicated their time, energy, and resources to advancing our country. I urge you to select individuals who embody excellence, integrity, and national service,” he said.
The committee’s chairman, the Emir of Lafia and retired Justice Sidi Bage, pledged that the committee would carry out its responsibilities with professionalism and diligence. “This is not just about selecting award recipients; it is about upholding the ideals of excellence and service that inspire pride in our nation. The honourees will reflect our collective achievements and serve as role models for future generations,” Justice Bage stated.
The committee comprises notable figures such as Farida Waziri, Alhaji Muhammad Jafar, Alhaji Bello Isah, and Chief Inikio Dede. It also includes representatives from key government ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
