FG Establishes Committee to Revise Intellectual Property Policy

The Federal Government has inaugurated an inter-ministerial steering committee to review Nigeria’s intellectual property policy and strategy draft.

The committee includes Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, as the chairperson; Ms. Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, as co-chairperson; and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce as a member.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite stated that the committee’s objective is to review the draft policy and strategy, ensuring they align with global standards while addressing Nigeria’s specific needs. She highlighted the significance of intellectual property rights in promoting innovation, economic growth, and societal progress.

She urged the committee members to diligently shape the future of intellectual property rights in Nigeria, empowering innovators, creators, and entrepreneurs to succeed globally.

“It is imperative that we create a policy that aligns with global best practices and addresses the unique needs of Nigerians. Your role in this committee is invaluable,” Dr. Uzoka-Anite emphasized.

Ms. Hannatu Musawa, co-chair and Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, stressed that the Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy Document is crucial for attracting investors to Nigeria.

“For the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, establishing a robust regulatory and legal framework, with the Intellectual Property Policy at its core, is essential. This policy will provide the legal backing necessary for investment,” Ms. Musawa stated.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce expressed gratitude to the ministers for their initiative, noting the critical need for IP protection in Nigeria.

Other committee members are drawn from various ministries, including Health and Social Welfare, Justice, Aviation, Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Agriculture and Rural Development, Education, Science and Technology, and Information and National Orientation.

The inter-ministerial committee is expected to complete the review within four weeks.
