Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This declaration forms part of a week-long national mourning period aimed at paying tribute to the former President’s life, leadership, and contributions to the nation.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described Buhari as a statesman who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication and integrity.
“In line with the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Tinubu, the Federal Government has set aside Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday to honour the memory and legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read in part.
The government emphasized that the holiday presents a moment for Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s pivotal role in the country’s democratic evolution, national unity, and socio-political development.
The minister further called on citizens to commemorate the late president’s legacy by fostering peace, patriotism, and national unity, values that were central to Buhari’s vision for Nigeria.
It was also reaffirmed that national flags would continue to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period, from Sunday, July 13, to Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The Federal Government extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
