Abuja — The Federal Government has announced that Wednesday, June 12, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Democracy Day.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, according to a statement released in Abuja on Sunday by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
In his message to the nation, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on the milestone of 26 consecutive years of democratic governance, emphasizing the importance of the date in the country’s political evolution.
“June 12 stands as a symbol of our collective journey toward a nation anchored on truth, justice, lasting peace, and a secure future,” the minister said. “The past 26 years reflect the strength, perseverance, and renewed hope of the Nigerian people.”
He noted that while democracy is an ongoing process open to refinement, it remains the bedrock of national development. He reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to upholding democratic ideals — including the freedom of choice and the participatory will of the people — in shaping the country’s political, social, economic, and cultural paths.
As the nation marks Democracy Day, citizens are encouraged to reflect on the progress made and the work still ahead in strengthening democratic institutions and practices.
