The federal government has awarded a N14 billion contract to Buildwell for the reconstruction of the outer Mariner shoreline, aimed at reinforcing the rail line.
Speaking in Lagos, the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, emphasized that infrastructure, whether it serves Lagos State or the federal government, benefits all Nigerians. He noted, “Over the past three months, we have observed serious threats to this critical infrastructure, particularly the rail line recently commissioned by the President. The existing shoreline has significantly deteriorated, especially along the outer Mariner, spanning 3.9 kilometers.”
Umahi explained that five companies were invited to bid for the contract, with Buildwell emerging as the winner over its competitor, CCECC, which bid N145 billion. He noted that the Buildwell contract was awarded through the Bureau of Public Procurement and received Federal Executive Council approval, with President Bola Tinubu insisting on due process. The 12-month contract will employ stronger concrete and anti-sulphate materials to prevent saltwater corrosion.
Buildwell’s Managing Director, George, stated that the protection work would be completed within 12 months and would safeguard the shoreline for more than 50 years, potentially up to a hundred years.
