The Federal Government has brought charges against eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian for engaging in illegal mining activities in the Lokpaukwu community of Umuchieze, Umunneochi Local Government Area, Abia State.
In a statement released by Segun Tomori, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, the suspects were apprehended by the Mining Marshals, a specialized security unit formed from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). This elite unit, codenamed “Operation Hayakin Kogo,” was established by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, to eradicate illegal mining activities in the sector.
The trial of the accused individuals has commenced before Justice J.K. Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The prosecution has filed a three-count charge, including mining without lawful authority and obstruction of lawful mining operations.
Following the initial court proceedings, the defendants were remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre pending the next hearing date for the continuation of their trial.
The statement also highlighted the Minister’s commitment to enhancing the operations of the Mining Marshals by integrating advanced technology and providing additional equipment to ensure Nigeria fully benefits from its natural mineral resources.
Led by ACC John Onoja, the Mining Marshals consist of a 2,570-strong force dedicated to curbing illegal activities by criminal syndicates in mining areas nationwide.
