FG and ASUU Begin Negotiations to Prevent Impending Strike

The Federal Government has initiated discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to prevent a planned strike.

After a two-hour closed-door meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman described the meeting as productive, indicating that ongoing consultations would address the issues raised by ASUU.

“We’ve had a very good and productive meeting, discussing progress on how to ensure the education system works well. Many of the issues we addressed are inherited and ongoing,” said Professor Mamman. “We have a consensus on the way forward. Further consultations will continue on some matters beyond the ministry’s scope, requiring collaboration with colleagues in other ministries.”

ASUU President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed that the negotiation process had begun, expressing hope that the government would implement the agreed-upon measures.

“This is the first formal meeting between the government and the Union since the current administration took office,” stated Professor Osodeke. “We discussed all issues and assigned tasks to certain individuals. We agreed on the way forward and will update our members on the details.”

ASUU had threatened a nationwide strike due to the federal government’s failure to meet its demands. These demands include university autonomy, addressing discrepancies in the reconstituted governing councils’ list, renegotiating the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, and clearing backlogs of Earned Academic Allowances and outstanding salaries.

Professor Osodeke emphasized the importance of resolving these issues for the benefit of students and the nation. “We hope the process will continue with set deadlines to review progress on these matters,” he added.
