FG Allocates N3 Billion to Flood-Affected States

The Federal Government, through the National Economic Council (NEC), has finalized plans to provide N3 billion in relief to states severely impacted by recent flooding. Affected regions include Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Niger, Gombe, and Kano, among others.

Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, made the announcement during a visit to Birnin Kebbi alongside Governor Nasir Idris and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. The visit included inspections of flood-damaged areas such as Argungu, Dukku, and Wacot Rice Mills.

Addressing journalists, Edun confirmed that NEC had approved N3 billion for flood-affected states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). “The Federal Executive Council has endorsed this amount to support farmers who lost their crops to the devastating floods,” he said.

The Minister emphasized that NEC has been proactive in assisting the states and the FCT in addressing the flooding crisis. Additionally, President Bola Tinubu has committed to expanding rice mills in Kebbi to boost food production, curb inflation, and generate jobs.

Governor Nasir Idris also appealed to the Federal Government for additional aid to support Kebbi rice farmers, many of whom suffered significant crop losses due to the flooding. He highlighted the state’s potential to feed the nation, noting that his administration had already provided farmers with free fertilizers, seedlings, and irrigation equipment.

As the rainy season draws to a close, Idris said Kebbi is prepared for large-scale dry-season farming with continued government support.

Minister Abubakar Atiku Bagudu commended President Tinubu’s efforts in stabilizing the economy. He also noted that the ongoing road projects from Sokoto to Badagry in Lagos would enhance irrigation and improve food security for the country.
