Lyon, France — Bruno Fernandes etched his name in UEFA Europa League history as he surpassed Juan Mata’s assist record during Manchester United’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Lyon on Thursday night.
The Portuguese midfielder delivered a precise pass to Joshua Zirkzee, who netted United’s second goal in the 88th minute, temporarily giving the visitors the lead.
With this latest contribution, Fernandes has now registered 12 assists in the Europa League knockout stages, the highest by any player in the competition’s history, overtaking Juan Mata.
Beyond assists, the Manchester United captain also extended his personal tally to 42 combined goals and assists in the tournament, reinforcing his dominance as the most productive player in Europa League history. He also holds the record for most goal involvements (17) in the knockout rounds.
Despite United’s near-victory, goalkeeper Andre Onana was at the center of two crucial errors, one in the 25th minute that gave Lyon the lead, and another in stoppage time that gifted the French side a 95th-minute equaliser.
