FEMALE VULCANIZER FINDS FULFILLMENT IN MALE-DOMINATED PROFESSION

IBADANA 33-year-old mother of two, Mercy Atobi, has defied societal expectations by thriving as a vulcanizer, a profession traditionally dominated by men. Operating her workshop opposite the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Moore Plantation, Apata, Ibadan, Atobi remains passionate about her craft.

In an exclusive interview, she revealed that her journey into vulcanizing began five years ago, driven by a deep conviction that skill and hard work would pave the way for success. While many expected her to pursue conventional female vocations like hairdressing or tailoring, she chose to follow her passion.

Despite holding a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Environmental Health from the College of Health and Science Technology, Ijero-Ekiti, Atobi remains committed to her trade, emphasizing that both the educated and uneducated can find fulfillment in vulcanizing. She highlighted the financial stability the job offers, noting that even on slow business days, she earns at least ₦3,000 after expenses.

However, her journey has not been without challenges. Public perception remains a hurdle, as some customers are often surprised to find a woman in the profession. While some commend her resilience, others question her choice, but she remains undeterred.

Beyond vulcanizing, Atobi also sells motorcycle spare parts and oil on a small scale. Looking ahead, she dreams of expanding her workshop and acquiring modern machinery to ease the stress of manual labor, ensuring greater efficiency in her work.

For Mercy Atobi, vulcanizing is not just a job—it is a passion and a means to financial independence, proving that determination and hard work can break gender barriers in any profession.
