Abuja, Nigeria— The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the federal government to intensify efforts in securing the release of Leah Sharibu, who has been in Boko Haram captivity for over seven years.
The appeal was made by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in a statement issued today, emphasizing the need for decisive action.
Leah Sharibu was among the 110 students abducted from Government Girls Science and Technical School, Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19, 2018.
While most of the girls were later released, Leah remains in captivity, allegedly for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.
Describing her prolonged ordeal as a tragic symbol of Nigeria’s security challenges, Archbishop Okoh stressed the urgency of upholding fundamental human rights, including freedom of religion.
“The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) stands with Leah’s family and all who continue to suffer in her absence,” he stated. “Her courage and unwavering faith in the face of adversity serve as a profound source of inspiration.”
CAN reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to justice, urging the Nigerian government and security agencies to take all necessary measures to bring Leah home. The statement also called on the international community to amplify their support for her release.
Highlighting the broader security concerns, Archbishop Okoh emphasized the need for proactive measures to curb violence and restore lasting peace in Nigeria.
The statement concluded with CAN’s renewed call for strengthened efforts to safeguard all citizens from terrorism and abductions.
