The Federal Government has clarified that the Murtala Muhammed Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has not been renamed as Wole Soyinka Way.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Rabiu Ibrahim, on Monday in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris confirmed that such a renaming had never been considered by the administration.
“For the record, on June 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road in the FCT, codenamed Arterial Road N20 (from Katampe to Jahi), which connects the existing Outer Northern Expressway (also known as Murtala Mohammed Expressway) to the Northern Parkway (also called Ahmadu Bello Way). During the inauguration of the N20, FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike proposed to the President that this new road be named after Prof. Wole Soyinka, and the President agreed,” the statement reads.
The clarification specifies that it is the newly constructed Arterial Road N20 that has been named after Professor Soyinka, while the Murtala Mohammed Expressway retains its original name, honoring former Head of State General Murtala Ramat Mohammed.
The statement urges citizens to disregard any misinformation about the renaming of the Murtala Mohammed Expressway, emphasizing that such reports are entirely false.
