The federal government has urged organisers of the proposed nationwide hunger protests to pursue dialogue instead of resorting to disorder.
The government emphasized its commitment to engaging with stakeholders on the country’s economic, social, and political challenges.
Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, revealed that the agency had identified the sponsors of the proposed protest and potential flashpoints. He assured that measures would be taken to prevent any violent occurrences at these locations.
“The channels of communication with the government and its various arms remain open for dialogue,” said Onilu. “The government will continue to respect citizens’ rights to protest and associate freely in line with democratic principles.”
He noted that the identities of many protest organisers are known, including their collaborators residing abroad, and that the government is taking necessary actions to thwart their subversive plans.
Onilu stated that the true intentions behind the planned protest are not related to governance or the state of the economy but are instead a ploy to destabilise the country, incite violence, and harm innocent citizens for narrow political reasons.
The NOA is intensifying efforts in civil intelligence gathering and is sensitising community leaders, parents, and youths across the 774 local government areas on the need for vigilance and collective preventive actions.
He added that another objective of the protest is to portray Nigeria as unstable to the international community, as part of a larger scheme to intimidate the government and seek support from the protest’s larger sponsors.
