FCT Secretariat to Launch Policy Addressing Youth Challenges in the Capital

The newly established Federal Capital Territory Youth Development Secretariat is set to unveil its first FCT Youth Development Policy document, aimed at tackling the challenges faced by young people in Nigeria’s capital.

Pioneer Mandate Secretary of the Secretariat, Comrade Abdullahi Ango, announced this during a stakeholder meeting held at the Pavilion Exhibition Ground in Abuja. Ango, who was represented by the Director of the Youth Development Department, Ambassador Asabe Umar, stated that the policy will provide a framework for implementing programs and projects focused on youth development.

He noted that states like Lagos and Osun have already taken steps in this direction, and explained that the creation of this policy is a significant move towards youth development. The policy will serve as a declaration of youth development priorities, a guide for political action, and a blueprint defining the status, rights, responsibilities, and roles of youth in the capital.

A statement signed by the Chief Information Officer of the FCTA, Omotoso Darlington Kayode, highlighted insights from Olusegun Medupin, Programmes Manager at Youth Hub Africa. Medupin explained that the youth policy is the result of extensive engagement with young people and research, drawing on the national youth policy, the Tinubu administration’s renewed hope agenda, the AU Youth Charter, the UN Youth Strategy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among others.

He further mentioned that the policy is being developed by the Youth Development Secretariat with technical support from YouthHubAfrica and backing from Action Aid Nigeria.
