The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a crackdown on vehicles operating without number plates.
In a statement issued on Saturday, FCT Police Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh emphasized that this measure is part of efforts to curb crime in the area.
Adeh expressed concern over the increasing number of vehicles in the FCT that either lack number plates or use single plates. She also highlighted the issue of car dealers operating beyond the authorized hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, which violates Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
The FCT Police Command PRO noted that many incidents of armed robbery, often referred to as ‘one chance,’ are linked to vehicles with single or no number plates. This situation has heightened public alarm and raised questions about the police’s ability to manage the issue effectively.
In response, Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, has directed the impounding of vehicles operating without proper number plates and the arrest and prosecution of their drivers.
Additionally, the police have cautioned car dealers against parking vehicles in unauthorized locations and driving beyond designated hours, warning that violators will face strict legal consequences.
To address the threat posed by ‘one chance’ robbers and the increase in cross-border banditry, the Federal Capital Territory Administration established two joint task forces in October 2023, comprising representatives from all regional security agencies.
