Tragedy struck in Abeokuta as a gas tanker explosion rattled Ita-Oshin along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, resulting in one fatality and leaving two others injured.
Mrs. Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, confirmed the incident to reporters in Abeokuta on Saturday, disclosing that the explosion occurred at 4:10 pm.
According to Okpe, six individuals were involved in the devastating incident. Regrettably, one person, identified as the motor boy, lost his life in the explosion, while two others sustained injuries and were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Providing further details, Okpe revealed that the incident involved a total of five vehicles, including two Nissan cars with registration numbers AAN 544 YC and LSD 993 CY, a Sino tanker marked T23771 LA, a Micra with the registration number GDB 841 XR, and a Honda CRV without a registration number.
The spokesperson elaborated that the tragedy unfolded when the tanker experienced brake failure, subsequently losing control and crashing into a road barricade before erupting into flames.
As a result of the inferno, several vehicles and nearby shops were engulfed in flames, prompting immediate contact with the fire service. Additionally, the scene was cordoned off to prevent any secondary accidents, ensuring the safety of bystanders and emergency responders alike.
