Ibadan, Nigeria – A tragic road accident that occurred along the Ibadan–Lagos expressway on Tuesday has resulted in the loss of multiple lives, with early reports confirming at least ten fatalities. The incident, described by eyewitnesses as severe, involved a total of six vehicles, including three commercial Nissan Micra taxis and three articulated trucks.
According to accounts gathered at the scene, all the vehicles were reportedly traveling from the Iwo Road axis of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, before becoming entangled in the high-impact collision. The circumstances leading to the crash were still being investigated as of the time this report was compiled.
Emergency responders, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were promptly dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue operations and manage traffic around the affected section of the highway. The force of the collision left some of the vehicles severely damaged, with mangled remains of both vehicles and victims making recovery efforts particularly challenging.
The Oyo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Rosary Alo, confirmed the incident in a brief statement. She noted that officers from the command remained on-site, working with other first responders to extract victims and secure the area. However, she added that a comprehensive casualty figure could not yet be confirmed as efforts to assess the full impact of the accident were still ongoing.
“We can confirm that a serious crash occurred involving multiple vehicles. Our teams are actively coordinating rescue and recovery operations,” Alo stated, emphasizing that detailed reports were still being compiled to establish the precise number of lives lost and those injured.
As of the latest updates, mutilated remains of victims were still being retrieved from the wreckage, underscoring the scale and brutality of the incident. Passersby and residents of nearby communities gathered near the scene in shock, with some assisting emergency workers in the recovery process.
The Ibadan–Lagos expressway is one of the busiest transport corridors in Nigeria, connecting major commercial cities and bearing heavy daily traffic. Accidents on the route have been recurrent over the years, often attributed to speeding, overloading, and mechanical failure. Tuesday’s crash has once again brought road safety into national focus, sparking calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved vehicle inspection protocols.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise maximum caution, particularly during peak hours and in high-traffic zones. The FRSC continues to emphasize the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic laws as part of broader efforts to reduce fatalities on Nigerian roads.
As investigations continue, the identities of the victims have yet to be released, pending official confirmation and notification of next of kin. The public is advised to avoid the affected route as traffic remains heavy due to ongoing recovery efforts.
