Fatal Ambush in Delta: 16 Military Personnel Slain by Agitated Youths

The tranquility of Bomadi Local Government Area (LGA) in Delta State was shattered as members of the 181 Amphibious Battalion fell victim to a deadly ambush while attempting to mediate a conflict in the Okuoma community.

On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the region was jolted by the tragic loss of 16 military personnel, sparking shock and grief among residents.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defense Information, revealed that the troops responded to a distress call arising from a dispute between the Okuoma and Okoloba communities. However, upon their arrival, they found themselves encircled by a group of enraged youths, leading to a violent clash that claimed numerous lives.

The reinforcement team, under the command of the battalion’s leader, also fell prey to the ambush, resulting in a devastating toll. Among the casualties were the commanding officer, two majors, a captain, and a dozen soldiers, making it one of the deadliest attacks in recent history.

Brigadier General Gusau affirmed the military’s resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice, highlighting ongoing efforts to apprehend those responsible for the reprehensible act. The incident has been formally reported to the Delta State Government, signaling a coordinated response to address the crisis.

Despite the profound loss, Brigadier General Gusau reiterated the military’s unwavering commitment to upholding peace and security nationwide. He underscored the determination within the ranks to fulfill their duty of safeguarding the Nigerian populace.

As investigations progress and arrests are made, authorities remain focused on uncovering the motives behind the brutal assault, underscoring the imperative of restoring order and justice in the affected region.
