Falana Advocates Special Budgetary Allocation for Orphanages

Governments across all levels have been urged to include special provisions for reputable orphanages in their annual budgets to enhance their operations and welfare.

Mrs. Funmi Falana (SAN), a women’s rights advocate and Director of Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA), made this appeal during her annual Christmas celebration with the children of Erelu Angela Adebayo Children’s Home in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Falana, wife of human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), emphasized the need for dedicated budgetary allocations for orphanages to support their effective management. She highlighted that such allocations would complement the efforts of kind-hearted individuals and philanthropists who contribute to these homes.

“The government can allocate adequate funds to orphanages for the benefit of vulnerable children. Relying solely on donations from Nigerians is not enough, as these homes cater to the less privileged, who are also entitled to government resources,” she stated.

Mrs. Falana also criticized the disproportionate allocation of funds in national budgets, suggesting that a fraction of what is allocated to lawmakers could significantly improve the conditions in orphanages.

On the current economic challenges, she urged the government to introduce policies and programs to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, stressing the urgency of addressing the country’s harsh economic conditions.

The Director of the Child Development Department, Ekiti State Ministry of Women and Social Development, Mrs. Bolanle Asubiojo, and the Matron of the orphanage, Mrs. Modupe Ajayi, expressed gratitude to Mrs. Falana for her decade-long support to the children and the home.

Mrs. Falana concluded by urging affluent Nigerians to show love and support to vulnerable children, noting that the future belongs to them.
