Lagos, Nigeria — The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has cautioned air travellers departing through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, to plan ahead and arrive early, as the reconstruction of the airport’s old international terminal gets underway.
The advisory, released on Friday, urged passengers to allow extra time for processing to avoid missed flights, noting that the rehabilitation project will temporarily affect traffic flow and airport operations.
“To ensure a smooth travel experience, passengers are strongly advised to leave early for the airport, comply with traffic directives, and use designated parking areas,” FAAN stated. “We also encourage that only intending travellers come into the airport premises during this period due to limited space.”
According to the agency, the project—valued at about N712 billion and approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on August 1, 2025—will involve the complete demolition and rebuilding of the existing terminal into a modern, world-class facility. It will also address structural lapses in the newer terminal, including the problematic design where departing and arriving passengers shared the same access points.
As part of the upgrade, a new elevated road leading directly to the departures level will be constructed to streamline passenger flow.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, explained that the 22-month project would strip the old terminal to its bare structure and overhaul all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to meet international standards.
