FA: Shearer lauds Calvin’s Positioning in Goal against Reds

London, England —  Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has commended Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey for his well-placed header that opened the scoring for Fulham in their FA Cup clash against Manchester United on Sunday.

Bassey’s goal gave Fulham an early advantage before Bruno Fernandes equalized for the Red Devils, setting the stage for a tightly contested encounter.

Reacting to the defender’s performance, Shearer highlighted Bassey’s awareness and positioning inside the box, emphasizing how his movement played a key role in the goal.

“That sums up Manchester United’s struggles,” Shearer told The Mirror. “They lose two headers from what should have been a straightforward defensive situation.”

He further praised Fulham’s attacking movement, noting how quickly they capitalized on United’s defensive lapses.

“The movement of the Fulham players in and around the penalty area was outstanding. You can see United’s defenders reacting slowly, whereas Bassey and his teammates were alert and decisive.”

Shearer also criticized United’s defensive organization, stating that their inability to deal with set pieces has been a recurring issue.

“Manchester United have been poor at defending corners, and this goal reflects that. Fulham’s players were sharper, and Bassey, in particular, reacted quickly to guide the ball into the corner,”  he added.

The Super Eagles star continues to impress with his performances, reinforcing his growing reputation as a reliable presence in Fulham’s backline.
