Expert Cautions Against Sleeping with Phones Under Pillows

Akin Ibitoye, a tech expert from TMB Tech, has issued a serious warning about a common practice among many Nigerians—sleeping with mobile phones under their pillows or close to their beds. He emphasized that this habit could have significant health and safety consequences.

In an exclusive interview, Ibitoye explained that mobile devices can pose fire hazards, especially when charging and covered by bedding. He cited cases where phones have overheated and caused fires or burns. “Phones don’t belong under pillows—it’s simply not safe,” he stated.

He also raised concerns about the health impact of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by smartphones. Although research is ongoing, some findings suggest that prolonged exposure to EMF, especially near the head, may disturb sleep, elevate stress levels, or even contribute to long-term health issues.

“The brain needs rest, not constant exposure to signals,” Ibitoye added.

Furthermore, he noted that phones disrupt sleep even when they aren’t actively in use. The urge to check them at night can lead to insomnia and anxiety. He encouraged the public to keep phones at a distance while sleeping to improve rest and mental well-being.

While health authorities have not yet made any official declarations, Ibitoye’s message is already sparking online discussions, with many Nigerians pledging to break the habit. He hopes the awareness spreads before more harm is done.
