The 2024 National Division 1 Handball League kicked off on Monday, July 15, with thrilling games that captivated a large crowd at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Aidia Academy, Team Osun, and Desert Warriors were among the standout teams that secured victories in their opening matches held at the stadium’s Multipurpose Sports Hall.
As the country’s second-tier championship, following the Adover Premier Handball League, the National Division 1 League’s commencement lived up to expectations. Teams embarked on their quest for promotion to the top division, showcasing impressive skills and intense gameplay that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
The opening match in the men’s category saw the host team, Bendel Dynamos, narrowly losing to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Shooters with a score of 21-22 in a tightly contested game.
In subsequent matches, MindScope Academy defeated Team Osun 19-15, while Aidia Academy edged out Cherubim & Seraphim Academy 22-21 in another close encounter.
In the women’s category, Desert Warriors of Yobe dominated Omo-Ogiefo with an 18-13 victory. Abia Valiant also started strong, defeating Police Machine 20-17, and Funad overcame Gboko Dreams 14-12 in the men’s category.
Team Ekiti suffered a narrow defeat to Omo-Ogiefo, losing 21-22 in the women’s section, and Bayelsa Queens fell 17-19 to Team Osun.
The competition continues on Tuesday with a full schedule of fixtures, as organizers work to resolve minor issues from the opening day.
