Oyo, Nigeria — The ancient city of Oyo is in high spirits as final preparations are underway for the grand coronation of Oba Akeem Owoade, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
The highly anticipated event is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, with major activities taking place at Oliveth Baptist High School, where Governor Seyi Makinde is set to officiate and lead a high-profile delegation of dignitaries.
Additional venues for the celebration include Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Mini Stadium, and the historic Alaafin’s Palace.
To ensure a safe and seamless ceremony, the Oyo State Government has deployed security personnel to strategic locations across the city and its environs, reinforcing the importance of the occasion.
Oba Akeem Owoade had earlier received the official staff and instrument of office from the governor on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the State Government House in Ibadan, marking the formal start of his reign.
He ascends the revered throne following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and successfully completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on Saturday, March 29.
An impressive guest list is expected at the coronation, including former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, ambassadors from four countries, over 200 Oyo indigenes based in Canada, as well as traditional rulers, top diplomats, and senior government officials.
“This coronation is not just a cultural event, it is a moment of pride and heritage for the Yoruba nation,” a government representative noted.
Security arrangements have been significantly upgraded in anticipation of the influx of dignitaries and guests, as Oyo prepares to etch another page in its royal history.
