Ex-Man Utd star, Wayne Rooney, urges Manchester United players to take responsibility for poor results

Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney has slammed the club’s players and feels they should take ‘a lot of responsibility’ for the growing pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

Pressure is mounting on Ten Hag amid the club’s poor start to the season.

His side were recently eliminated from the Carabao Cup after losing to Newcastle United.

However, Rooney, who is currently the manager of Championship club Birmingham City, has pointed his finger at the club’s players as the key problem.

Asked if he had sympathy for Ten Hag amid the mounting pressure on the former Ajax coach, Rooney told reporters: “That is the job. That is a part of the job. We all know that when we take jobs, whatever job it is.

“I knew coming here [Birmingham] there was a lot of pressure and I’m sure Erik ten Hag knows that at Manchester United. It’s not going as well as they would like or how they would have hoped.

“But I think the players have to take a lot of responsibility as well. I know some of the players there and they are not performing to the levels I know they can.

“Of course, ultimately, it starts and ends with the manager and that is part of being a manager.

“He will get criticism after the last few weeks but I think the players can do a lot more than what they are currently doing for him.”
