Ex-IGP Solomon Arase Dies at 69

Abuja, NigeriaSolomon Arase, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and one-time chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), has passed away at the age of 69.

Arase died at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja on Sunday, August 31, 2025, after a brief illness, with his family announcing the sad news. As of now, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the family has released detailed official statements regarding the cause of death.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Arase had a distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force. He enlisted in 1981 after earning a degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and went on to obtain law degrees from the University of Benin and the University of Lagos.

Arase served as Nigeria’s 18th IGP from April 2015 to June 2016 before retiring. He also headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, and was Assistant Inspector-General responsible for Intelligence. Internationally, he represented Nigeria in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia.

Post-retirement, he was appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission in January 2023 by President Muhammadu Buhari, a position he held until June 2024.

Colleagues and police officials have commended Arase for his leadership, professionalism, and significant contributions to policing reforms and national security.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as families and associates mourn the loss of a respected law enforcement icon.
