Kano state, Nigeria: The Kano State Censorship Board has announced an indefinite ban on all Kauyawa Day events—popularly known as Villagers’ Day celebrations—alongside a suspension of operations at all event centres across the state.
The announcement was made by the Board’s Executive Secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, during a press briefing on Saturday following a management meeting of the board. He stated that the decision aligns with recent amendments to the law governing the board, passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and signed into law by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
According to El-Mustapha, the 2025 amendment grants the Censorship Board enhanced authority to regulate the activities of DJs, event organisers, and venues hosting public gatherings within the state.
“In line with the new law, any event conducted under the banner of Kauyawa Day will now be considered unlawful,” he declared.
He called on traditional and community leaders, as well as security agencies—including Hisbah, the Kano State Vigilante Group, and local watch groups—to assist in enforcing the directive and ensuring strict adherence.
“Effective immediately, organising Villagers’ Day events constitutes an offence under state law,” El-Mustapha stated. “We urge all stakeholders to cooperate with the board in enforcing this measure, which aims to preserve order and uphold community values.”
