Kanostate,Nigeria: The European Union, in collaboration with the Kano State Government, has officially launched an Energy Efficiency Network (EEN) in Kano under the framework of the Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP), aimed at promoting sustainable industrial growth through reduced energy consumption.
At the launch event in Kano, Inga Stefanowicz, Head of the Green and Digital Economy Section of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized Kano’s significance as a major commercial and industrial center in Northern Nigeria. She noted that the EEN initiative is part of broader efforts by the EU and German government to support Nigeria’s energy transition.
“The initiative fosters energy efficiency and sustainability in industries, creating an enabling environment for renewable energy investments and rural electrification,” Stefanowicz stated. She added that the program, already piloted in the southwest since 2020, has delivered notable success, including over ₦5 billion in cost savings across participating companies within just 15 months.
These achievements, according to her, stem from the collaborative efforts with key national stakeholders such as the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
Representing the Director General of MAN, Dr. Oluwa Segun commended the initiative led by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), noting that manufacturers continue to face serious challenges stemming from unreliable energy supply. He stressed the importance of efficiency-focused reforms in reducing operational costs for manufacturers.
In his remarks, Kano State Commissioner for Investment, Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, expressed the state government’s appreciation for the EU and German cooperation. He reaffirmed Kano’s readiness to partner on initiatives that drive energy efficiency and enhance industrial performance across the state.
The EEN launch in Kano marks a significant step toward replicating successful energy-saving strategies from other regions and scaling them across Nigeria’s industrial heartlands.
