The European Union has committed €201 million in aid to support the most vulnerable populations affected by the humanitarian crises in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Nigeria.
This announcement coincides with the Senior Officials Meeting on Sahel and Lake Chad, held today, May 28, 2024, in Brussels.
According to a statement from the EU delegation in Nigeria, the funding will be directed towards enhancing food security, addressing malnutrition, providing health care and protection, and improving water, sanitation, and hygiene.
The aid package also includes support for shelter and educational activities, along with logistical assistance for transporting humanitarian workers and supplies to remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The EU emphasized that its humanitarian aid efforts will continue to concentrate on regions directly impacted by ongoing insecurity and conflict, including West Africa’s coastal countries that are experiencing the spillover effects from Central Sahel.
