Manchester City’s pursuit of the Premier League title has taken a setback after Norwegian forward Erling Haaland was ruled out of Thursday’s crucial match at Brighton. Haaland was absent from City’s 1-0 triumph over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley last Saturday due to a muscle injury sustained in the Champions League quarter-final elimination against Real Madrid the previous week.
The club’s top scorer, who has netted 20 goals in the Premier League this season, is still recuperating and won’t be part of the squad travelling to the Amex Stadium as the reigning champions aim to reduce the gap with league leaders Arsenal.
City manager Pep Guardiola indicated that Haaland’s injury is not severe and he might be in contention for Sunday’s match against Nottingham Forest. Despite Haaland’s absence, Guardiola received positive news with England players Phil Foden and John Stones being cleared to play against Brighton following their own fitness issues. “Erling will not feature in tomorrow’s game, but the other two will be available,” Guardiola informed the press on Wednesday. “It’s not a major concern, but he won’t participate in this fixture.” With a thrilling title race approaching the final stages, City, currently in third place, are four points behind leaders Arsenal, who routed Chelsea 5-0 on Tuesday.
Guardiola’s squad have two matches in hand on Arsenal and have played one game less than second-placed Liverpool, who will face Everton in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
