On January 27th, 2024, a groundbreaking awareness campaign took place in Karonmagiji Community, Abuja, as part of the “Breaking the Barriers of Women of Leadership” project. The campaign aimed to challenge patriarchal cultural norms and stereotypes that hinder women’s participation in leadership positions and empower women to take an active role in decision-making processes within their community.
The event, organized by a dedicated team led by the Project Lead Lolade, brought together women from diverse backgrounds, ranging from young aspiring leaders to experienced community members. The campaign featured a series of interactive sessions, discussion in their Local dialect, all designed to enhance participants’ understanding of leadership, cultural norms, and stereotypes.
The highlight of the campaign was a one-day awareness in the community, the awareness provided a platform for women aged 18-40 years old understands drawbacks of patriarchal norms and explore ways to break free from these barriers. During the Advocacy we met with influential figures in the community such as the Wife of the Chief and Women Leaders who hold key positions in the community.
During the awareness campaign and advocacy we shed light on the importance of women’s active participation in leadership roles. Practical tips and strategic steps were shared on how to create a supportive environment for women and how community members, including men, can play a vital role in supporting women’s involvement in leadership positions.
The impact of the campaign was profound. The participating women not only gained valuable knowledge and skills but also experienced an enhanced sense of self-confidence and empowerment. The campaign also aimed to bring about positive changes in community attitudes towards women in leadership, promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.
The success of the awareness campaign was evident in the increased participation of women in community decision-making processes. This positive shift highlighted the importance of breaking through the barriers of patriarchal norms and stereotypes. As a result, the socio-economic conditions for women in Karonmagiji Community improved, ensuring a more equitable and inclusive society.
Looking ahead, the project’s sustainability plan includes the establishment of a community women’s group within Karonmagiji Community. This group, led by elected executives, will continue to encourage and support women in actively participating in leadership positions, fostering a sense of unity and empowerment among its members.
