Emefiele to Forfeit $4.7M, N830M, and Properties

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the interim forfeiture of $4,719,054 and N830,875,611, along with various properties, linked to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Justice Yellim Bogoro issued the order on May 23, 2024, following an ex-parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) represented by counsel Bilkisu Buhari and C.C. Chineye.

In his ruling, Justice Bogoro stated, “I find merit in the application and hereby grant the order as prayed. The applicant is directed to publish this order in nationwide newspapers to notify any interested parties to show cause why the final forfeiture should not be made.”

The temporarily forfeited funds were held in accounts associated with entities including Omoile Anita Joy, Deep Blue Energy Service Limited, Exactquote Bureau De Change Ltd, Lipam Investment Services Limited, Tatler Services Limited, Rosajul Global Resources Ltd, and TIL Communication Nigeria Ltd.

The forfeited properties connected to Emefiele include real estate assets such as units of a building under construction in Ikoyi, an office space in Lekki Peninsula Scheme 1, and industrial properties in Lagos.

The EFCC pursued the interim forfeiture under laws such as the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006 and the Nigerian Constitution. The court set a deadline for interested parties to contest the forfeiture.

Further proceedings are scheduled for July 2, 2024, to address the motion for final forfeiture.
