Ekiti – A coalition of human rights and community-based organizations across Nigeria has named Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji as the 2024 Governor of the Year. The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NIHRCO), comprising 130 civil society groups nationwide, announced the recognition during its General Congress meeting in Lagos.
The coalition lauded Oyebanji’s achievements in promoting peace, transparency, and sustainable development. Ekiti State was praised for its political stability and community integration under his leadership. Oyebanji was also commended for his exceptional initiatives for People with Disabilities (PWDs), including the establishment of Nigeria’s first therapeutic center and the provision of over 200 assistive devices during the 2024 International Day of People Living with Disabilities.
The governor’s administration was acknowledged for its efforts in public accountability, as Ekiti emerged as the best-performing state in the Subnational Audit Efficacy Index conducted by Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative. The state also earned national and global recognition for its primary healthcare reforms, disease surveillance excellence, and improvements in public infrastructure, such as electricity and access roads.
Additionally, Ekiti State University ranked among the top 20 higher institutions in Nigeria, further highlighting Oyebanji’s commitment to education. His wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, was recognized for empowering widows, orphans, and the underprivileged through scholarships and various support programs under her WAOH Foundation.

The award, represented by a plaque, is expected to inspire other state governors to prioritize governance that addresses citizens’ needs and aspirations.
