The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is scheduled to prosecute Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chiefpriest, on charges related to the alleged mishandling of the Nigerian currency. The arraignment is set for Wednesday in Lagos.
This legal action follows shortly after the well-known internet personality, Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, received a six-month imprisonment for similar charges of currency misuse.
The EFCC claims that Cubana Chiefpriest will be brought before the Federal High Court in Lagos for his actions involving the naira during a public event. The charge sheet, which was filed on April 4, 2024, by the EFCC’s prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) and a team of seven lawyers, accuses Okechukwu of disrespecting the national currency by spraying it during a social gathering at Eko Hotel.
The specific charge states: “That you, Okechukwu Pascal, on the 13th of February 2024, at Eko Hotel, within the court’s jurisdiction, while dancing at a social event, mishandled legal tender in the form of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying the notes over a duration of two hours, thereby committing an offence in violation of and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.”
Additionally, the charge mentions similar conduct by Okechukwu Pascal during social events in 2020 and January 2024, where he is accused of mishandling N500 notes, an act also considered an offence under the same section of the Central Bank Act.
Politics Nigeria has gathered that in the upcoming days, more high-profile individuals are expected to face charges for the improper display and use of the naira at extravagant social functions.
