Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has publicly alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing to detain him on November 14, immediately following the conclusion of his tenure. Speaking at the EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session in Abuja, Obaseki asserted that the arrest plans are politically motivated, targeting him on charges of alleged fraud. This announcement comes amid heightened speculation around his post-office future and his stance on anti-corruption inquiries into his administration’s activities.
Obaseki conveyed his confidence and readiness to face any potential investigation. He emphasized his openness to scrutiny and even suggested he could use the time in custody for personal research, underscoring his calm and commitment to transparency. “Wherever they keep me, I’ll spend time doing research,” he told the audience. He highlighted his administration’s focus on Edo State’s development, stressing the long-term impact of projects initiated under his leadership, which he regards as significant milestones aimed at benefitting the citizens.
Defending his administration, Obaseki listed a series of accomplishments achieved over his eight-year term, which he claims have contributed to the state’s progress. These projects, he argued, are part of a legacy dedicated to public welfare, regardless of any attempts to disrupt his image. He expressed that these initiatives were made possible by a steadfast commitment to serving the people of Edo State, overcoming numerous political and logistical challenges.
The governor dismissed the fraud accusations, describing them as baseless and part of a “political witch-hunt” orchestrated by adversaries. He cited jealousy as the underlying motive, attributing opposition efforts to resentment over his achievements. “Those who have opposed me in Edo State are cruel, very wicked, and filled with jealousy and envy because they cannot match the accomplishments we’ve made in the past eight years,” he claimed. He further argued that these opponents have resorted to various tactics, including submitting unverified complaints against him to federal authorities, all in a bid to tarnish his record and undermine his accomplishments.
Obaseki underscored his willingness to cooperate with the EFCC if required, reiterating that he has “nothing to hide.” He mentioned that he is prepared to present himself voluntarily if the situation demands, reflecting his commitment to accountability and the rule of law. His remarks implied that he views the EFCC’s anticipated investigation as an opportunity to demonstrate his administration’s integrity.
Beyond personal challenges, Obaseki called on public officeholders to focus on service delivery rather than pursuing vendettas. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing Nigeria’s development and alleviating the struggles of its citizens. “What’s important is to focus on the people to improve Nigeria, as the suffering is excessive,” he urged, advocating for constructive governance over political grievances.
The governor concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to civil service reform, a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda. He pointed to his work in strengthening the civil service in Edo State, citing it as an essential measure to support the long-term stability and functionality of governance. According to Obaseki, this focus on bureaucratic reform and prioritizing citizens’ needs forms the foundation of his legacy, which he hopes will continue to benefit Edo State and set an example for public servants across Nigeria.
