The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing to arraign Godwin Emefiele, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, on Wednesday. Emefiele faces charges related to authorizing the printing of N684.5 million at the rate of N18.96 billion. Initially scheduled for April 30, 2024, the arraignment was rescheduled following consultations with the involved parties.
According to the EFCC, Emefiele is accused of violating the law and causing harm to the public interest by implementing the naira swap policy initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari. The charges against him include unlawfully approving the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation.
The former CBN governor will appear before Justice Maryann Anenih of the FCT High Court in Abuja to face these allegations. Previously, Emefiele pleaded not guilty to six counts of procurement fraud before Justice Hamza Muazu. Among the accusations was the abuse of office through the approval of a contract worth N1.2 billion for the acquisition of 43 vehicles between 2018 and 2020.
In addition to the upcoming arraignment, Emefiele was previously brought before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on April 8, 2024. On that occasion, he was charged alongside Henry Omoile for an alleged fraud involving $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.
