Lagos State – There was chaos at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos on Friday as EFCC operatives rearrested Audu Friday, a suspect linked to a N3.4 billion cybercrime and Ponzi terrorism ring, shortly after he secured bail.
Sources told FIJ that Friday, anticipating a rearrest, planned an escape with the assistance of Julius Ogueri, the Deputy Controller of Corrections, reportedly offering a $500 bribe to ensure a smooth exit. His wife and driver were on standby to pick him up directly inside the prison premises.
However, events took a twist when Ogueri allegedly betrayed the deal by handing Friday over to EFCC officials at the gate, leading to a dramatic scene where the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by security personnel.
Ogueri denied collecting a bribe, claiming instead that he coordinated with the EFCC for the handover outside prison grounds. He said the driver’s entrance was routine, and that Friday’s wife violated prison rules by filming the incident, which led to the temporary seizure of her phone.
Both the wife and driver were taken by the EFCC for questioning. An internal panel has launched an investigation into the incident, with findings expected by Wednesday.
Audu Friday is currently facing trial alongside two Chinese nationals for allegedly recruiting Nigerian youths into fraudulent online activities posing as foreign nationals.
