Kano state, Nigeria: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), through its Kano Zonal Command, has initiated an investigation into the seizure of foreign currencies totaling $86,500, 305,150 Saudi Riyals, and €200 at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
The funds were intercepted by Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers on Sunday, April 27, after a clearing agent, identified as Sale Bala, attempted to collect an unaccompanied bag believed to have been smuggled into the country.
During inspection, Customs officials discovered the currencies concealed within duvets and packages of dates inside the luggage.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Bala and a second individual, Abdullahi Tahir, who was allegedly assigned to take possession of the bag after clearance.
The confiscated funds were formally handed over to the EFCC by Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdulahi Hashim, and received by EFCC Assistant Commander, Aminu Bashir.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the EFCC confirmed that both suspects and the seized currencies are in custody and will face prosecution upon the completion of investigations.
